proposed package on 2007-08 electoral
arrangements is put to the Legislative
Council for a vote. Thirty-four members
vote in support of the package, 24
against, with one abstention. Although
more than half of the members support
the package, it falls short of the
two-thirds majority support required

press briefing, the Chief Executive
says he regrets that the Government
has failed to secure the required
two-thirds majority support from lawmakers
even though the majority of the public
supports the electoral package. As
a result, the existing electoral arrangements
will continue to apply in the 2007-08
elections. He also says that the Commission
on Strategic Development will follow
up the issue of setting a timetable
for universal suffrage. |
