The Hong Kong Wetland Park (HKWP) Project, located
at the southern edge of the Mai Po Inner Deep Bay Ramsar Site, is
a millennium capital works project designated by the Government
of HKSAR. It upgrades a 61-hectare ecological mitigation area to
a world class conservation, education and tourism facility. The
project is staged in two phases. The Phase 1 of HKWP was opened
to the public in December 2000, serving as an early venue for publicity
of the HKWP project and promotion on wetland conservation. Phase
2 of HKWP, comprising a 10 000 square-metre Visitor Centre and a
60-hectare Wetland Reserve, is a new eco-tourism initiative to showcase
the functions and values of wetlands. Phase 2 is under construction
and the entire project will be completed in late 2005 or early 2006.
