Hong Kong’s reservoirs and water catchment areas have shaped much of its countryside, with the oldest structures dating back to the 19th century. Newer reservoirs were built in the 1960s to accommodate water supplied from the Dongjiang in Guangdong Province. This dam at Shek Lei Pui Reservoir was built in 1925.

The Aberdeen reservoirs on Hong Kong Island opened in 1931.

Plover Cove Reservoir, constructed between 1960 and 1968 by damming and draining a sea inlet in the northeastern New Territories, is one of the reservoirs used to store Dongjiang water.

The Tai Tam Tuk Reservoir Dam was constructed between 1912 and 1917 and declared a monument in 2009.

The governments of Hong Kong and Guangdong Province sign their first agreement for the supply of Dongjiang water on 15 November 1960.

Both sides ink a new agreement for Dongjiang water supplies on 28 May 2015 to mark the 50th anniversary of the first agreement.
