The Hong Kong Paralympic Committee and Sports Association for the Physically Disabled (HKPC&SAPD) in its role as the National Paralympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, is the only sports entity recognised by the International Paralympic Committee for the selection of athletes with disabilities for major international competitions, such as world championships and the Paralympic Games. HKPC&SAPD also plays an active role in the conduct of regional functions and the establishment of close working relationships with neighbouring nations and territories with the ultimate aim of enhancing the level of disabled sports in Hong Kong and Asia.

With the commitment and hard work of its athletes and coaches, HKPC&SAPD has achieved impressive results in the international sporting arena in recent years. In 2005, the Hong Kong, China team won a total of 107 medals in international competitions — 47 gold, 27 silver and 33 bronze.

The Hong Kong Sports Association for the Mentally Handicapped aims to develop, promote and organise sports activities for people with intellectual disabilities in order to fully develop their sports potential, cultivate positive attitudes in sportsmanship and facilitate their integration into the community. The association provides sports training and competitions for more than 35 000 people and through the years has been steadily developing a training programme to cater for all levels of ability.

Athletes took part in numerous international competitions during the year and made the most of these opportunities to polish their skills. Highlights included the 4th INAS-FID World Table Tennis Championships in Thouars, France, where Hong Kong won gold medals in all the three women's events; the tour of the Czech Republic where the Hong Kong team won four gold, four silver and six bronze medals in the 4th INAS-FID World Swimming Championship and the 5th INAS-FID World Athletics Championships in Australia where Hong Kong carried off a gold medal in the men's 4x400 metre event.

Among the other competitions in which athletes competed successfully were the FISA World Rowing Championships, the 2005 Special Olympics World Winter Games, the 2005 Special Olympics East Asia Basketball Games, the 6th Shanghai Special Olympics Games and the Macao Special Olympics Table Tennis and Badminton Competition for the Intellectually Disabled. A total of 115 medals, with 48 gold, 40 silver and 27 bronze were won by intellectually disabled athletes during the year.
