Ocean Park

Ocean Park, situated on the southern side of Hong Kong Island, is an acclaimed educational theme park covering 87 hectares of land. Operated by the Ocean Park Corporation, a statutory board, it is a not-for-profit organisation providing elements of entertainment, education and conservation.

Over three million people visit Ocean Park each year. With 25 years of history, the park has established itself as a major tourist attraction. Local residents as well as tourists from around the world enjoy its facilities and services.

Apart from entertainment through thrill rides and a wide variety of shows, the park prides itself on its education and conservation programmes. Over 30 000 school children in Hong Kong visit the park each year and learn about animals through structured programmes and behind-the-scenes tours. The park's research on marine mammals and artificial insemination has also produced the world's first successful births of two Pacific bottle-nose dolphins conceived through artificial insemination, in May and June 2001.

Since 1999, Ocean Park has been home to a pair of giant pandas, An An and Jia Jia, a gift to Hong Kong from the Central People's Government. Both have adapted well in their Giant Panda Habitat.

Ocean Park comprises two sections the Headland and the Lowland connected by a cable car system that offers spectacular panoramic views of the southern side of Hong Kong and the South China Sea. The Headland has many thrill rides including the Dragon, Eagle, Crazy Galleon, Flying Swing, Mine Train, and the recently opened Abyss Turbo Drop. Complementing the rides is the Ocean Theatre where dolphins and sea lions both entertain and educate visitors. Other attractions are the Atoll Reef Aquarium, the Shark Aquarium, and the Pacific Pier with its California sea lions and harbour seals. At the park's Tai Shue Wan site, there is the entrance to the Middle Kingdom and a 225-metre outdoor escalator leading to the Headland.

The Lowland, located adjacent to the Giant Panda Habitat, has a number of attractions including the Goldfish Pagoda which has more than 100 goldfish of various species. Other attractions include Kid's World, a dedicated area for young visitors, and the Dolphin University where visitors are able to have a closer encounter with the park's dolphin families.

Located near the cable car station at the Lowland, the Whiskers' Wild Ride opened in April. This innovative simulation ride has special multi-sensory elements, and represents a notable technical and artistic achievement for Ocean Park. It is the first simulation ride film wholly designed and produced in Hong Kong, being a collaboration between Ocean Park and local digital content producer, Centro Digital Pictures Ltd.

In addition to the mechanical rides and marine mammal attractions, Ocean Park presents various events for the enjoyment of visitors. Such events typically mark a season of the year or festivals or other occasions, such as the summer, Halloween, Christmas, Lunar New Year and Easter.
